Sterling Silver

Sterling Silver is a popular and widely recognised metal alloy used in jewellery creation. It is renowned for its stunning lustre, durability and timeless appeal.

".925" refers to its composition. To be classified as Sterling Silver, an item must contain a minimum of 92.5% pure Silver by weight, with the remaining percentage 7.5%, made up of other metals, most commonly copper or zinc.

Combining Silver with these metals makes the jewellery more durable. Sterling Silver jewellery is stamped with the number 925 to identify the percentage of pure silver in the alloy.

Additionally, .925 Sterling Silver is often hypoallergenic, making it an excellent option for individuals with sensitive skin or metal allergies making it a safe and comfortable choice for daily wear.

Over time, Sterling Silver may develop a subtle patina or tarnish due to exposure to air and moisture. However, this is considered a natural characteristic of the metal and can be easily removed with simple cleaning methods, restoring its original shine and beauty.

Oxidised Silver

Some Sterling Silver jewellery may go through a process of oxidisation whereby the surface is exposed to a chemical process which causes the silver to darken giving it a gun metal lustre. The change in the colour of the surface of the jewellery is in response to the introduction of sulphides which have accelerated the natural tarnishing process giving a blackened look.

Plated Silver (Gold & Rose Gold)

Jewellery which is labelled as gold plated has been electroplated or mechanically coated with either yellow Gold or Rose Gold over a Sterling Silver base. This jewellery is marked as Sterling Silver.  Combining the Gold or Rose Gold with the versatility of Silver creates jewellery with the appearance of Gold at a more affordable price for the customer.

Standard gold plating is typically between 0.5 - 1 micron and depends on the level of wear for the jewellery, ie. jewellery which is heavily worn will have a higher gold plating applied.

316L Grade Steel

316L Grade Steel or implant-grade steel is a high quality material used in body piercing jewellery. The "316" in its name indicates that it contains 316% chromium, while the "L" stands for low carbon content. The combination of these elements makes 316L Grade Steel highly resistant to corrosion and oxidation, ensuring it remains relatively unaffected by exposure to moisture and body fluids. 316L Grade Steel reduces the risk of a flare up or sensitivity for the wearer. 

It is a non-scratch resistant material which can be polished to a high shine and is used for piercing due to its exceptional properties, safety, and durability. Its silvery finish resembles more expensive metals like platinum or white gold and makes it an attractive option for individuals seeking stylish and budget-friendly body piercing jewellery.

316L Grade steel is easy to clean and maintain using mild soap and water to help keep the jewellery looking pristine. It can be sterilised in an autoclave.

PVD Steel (Black, Gold & Rose Gold)

PVD Steel body jewellery is 316L Grade Steel which has been coated in a Titanium compound using a Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) process to give it colour. PVD is a thin-film deposition technique that involves vaporising solid metal through a process of evaporation. The vaporised metal then condenses onto the surface creating a thin, durable, and protective coating.

We supply Black, Gold and Rose Gold PVD products.

The PVD coating process produces a superior product with the added advantage of producing a low-friction, low-allergy, high shine piece of jewellery, with a tough scratch-resistant finish.

Titanium

Titanium is a metal which is is renowned for its strength, lightness and durability. It resists scratches and dents, ensuring that it maintains its beauty over time. Despite being incredibly strong, Titanium is surprisingly lightweight making it comfortable and easy to wear for extended periods.

It can be fully autoclaved. It is bio-compatible and ideal for people sensitive to nickel. It is very resistant to corrosion and therefore does not react with oxygen or bodily fluids making it the best choice for an initial piercing. Titanium is also non-magnetic.

Kingsley Ryan Titanium is suitable for use in initial piercings and is made from the highest medical grade which is also known as Grade 23. It is ideal for wearing in close and prolonged contact piercings.

Anodised Titanium

Anodised Titanium jewellery is a type of titanium jewellery which has undergone a specialised surface treatment called anodisation. Anodisation is an electrochemical process that alters the oxide layer on the surface of the Titanium, resulting in a wide range of vibrant and striking colours.

Different voltages give different colours and because there are no dyes or plating involved, the surface won’t chip like a plated product and all the properties and safety elements of this metal remain the same.

It should be noted that constant wear in an oral piercing may cause the colour to fade over time due to mouth acidity and the consumption of certain food and drink.

Acrylic

Acrylic is an alternative to traditional metal-based jewellery for body piercings. It is crafted from acrylic, a type of plastic known for its lightweight, durable, and hypoallergenic properties, making it a preferred choice for individuals with sensitive skin or metal allergies.

Acrylic is significantly lighter than metal so it ideal to wear for extended periods and is especially advantageous for individuals with larger or multiple piercings, as it reduces the strain on the pierced area and promotes a more comfortable wearing experience.

Despite many advantages, it is important to consider other aspects when choosing acrylic body jewellery. Acrylic is not as durable as metals and can scratch more easily. It is not recommended for fresh or healing piercings, as it may not be as biocompatible as medical-grade metals used in body piercing jewellery.
